Plastic free University – SIU
Plastic free University – Symbiosis International University
Symbiosis International University’s aim to make the varsity environment friendly and plastic free is not just a knee jerk reaction to the Government’s appeal, but there have been genuine efforts to protect the environment through Symbiosis Centre for Waste Management and Sustainability (SCWMS) along with various Institutes of Symbiosis International University.
After working on various facets like waste water management, Biogas etc… the University through SCWMS now aims at eradicating the plastic monster from varsity campus, making a plastic free university.
The first step was taken in February 2016 where students, teaching and non-teaching staff participated in the Government of India’s ‘Plastic free cities’ campaign. The country wide campaign was initiated from Pune by the Union Environment Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar.
Dr. Vidya Yeravdekar, Principal Director, Symbiosis Society has said that with this first step of participation in Plastic free cities campaign along with the city, we will be making all Symbiosis International University campuses plastic free.
To take this campaign forward and to curb plastic waste, SIU has started educating students and staff to make the University plastic free.
Starting with awareness drive in the campuses, SIU is aiming to make the varsity campus plastic free from academic year 2016-17.
Meanwhile, many institutes and campuses have already started the battle against plastic garbage. Symbiosis Institute of Business Management (SIBM), Hyderabad has already stopped using bottled water during all events and even for internal consumption since last July. Taking this further, SIBM has planned to avoid use of other plastic material in Hyderabad campus.
Symbiosis Center for Management Studies (SCMS), Pune has come up with the initiative called Ut’thana. The project aims at developing alternative Sustainable Business Model (by creating Livelihood for Underprivileged Women and protecting Environment from Plastic Pollution.)
These are just a couple of examples towards environment protection.
Watch this space for more such initiatives.
